Active Shooter, Workplace Violence, & Bullying

 

Presented by Sylvester Swain and Karen O’Neill

At our September meeting, Sylvester Swain (School Resource Officer, Santa Maria School District) and Karen O’Neill (Attorney at law) will hold a presentation regarding active shooters, workplace violence, and bullying situations.


Officer Sylvester K. Swain was born and raised in our community and has lived here for approximately 33 years and has over ten years of various Law Enforcement experience with The City of Santa Maria Police Department. His Law enforcement experience consists of Patrol, Field Training Officer, Firearms instructor, Less than Lethal Munitions Instructor, S.W.A.T team member and currently a School Resource Officer. As part of the Police Departments Community Services Unit it is their goal to work alongside the citizens and the youth of our community, while providing service and education to achieve a safer and more prosperous community.


Attorney Karen O’Neill of Kirk & Simas, received her Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) from San Diego State University. Karen interned in the United States Department of Justice working in both the Office of Tribal Justice and the Violence Against Women Office. Karen attended McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, earning her law degree, with distinction, in 2000. She focuses her practice on civil litigation, including insurance defense work, and employment law. Karen primarily represents employers and management. She is a member of the North Santa Barbara County Bar Association, the State Bar of California and of the Labor and Employment Section of the State Bar. Karen is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Santa Maria Human Resources Association, Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens, Altrusa Foundation, and provides pro bono legal services to the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society.
